Silk Care Guide
Congratulations on investing in SILKGALA's 16 momme, 19 momme, or 22 momme premium silk collection. Silk is a natural protein fiber—think of it as a delicate second skin, requiring the same gentle care as your finest hair or delicate garments.
Proper care is more than just cleaning; it's about maintaining the renowned anti-aging benefits and unparalleled luster of our high momme silks. Follow this guide to ensure your silk always looks new.
Part One: The Golden Rules of Silk Washing
The wrong detergent or water temperature is the fastest way to damage silk. Always follow these rules: Detergent Usage (Crucial!)
Avoid: Regular laundry detergents containing enzymes, bleach, or optical brighteners. These harsh chemicals damage the natural protein fibers, causing yellowing.
-
Use: Use only a pH-neutral liquid detergent (such as a mild baby shampoo) formulated specifically for silk, wool, or delicate garments.
-
Hand wash (safest method): We recommend hand washing to maximize the lifespan of silk, especially your precious 22 momme silk.
-
Water temperature: Use only cold water (below 30°C/86°F). Hot water will damage the structure of silk.
-
Procedure: Pour cold water into a clean basin and add a few drops of silk detergent. Immerse the garment in the water, gently agitate and press for 3-5 minutes. Never rub, wring, or twist the silk, as the fibers are most fragile when wet.
-
Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with cold water until all soap residue is removed.
-
Machine Wash: (If necessary)
If machine washing is necessary, treat your silk like glass:
• Protection: Turn the garment inside out and place it in a fine-mesh laundry bag (this is key to protecting the garment).
• Settings: Select the "Gentle" or "Silk" wash program on your washing machine. • Water and Spin: Use cold water and set the spin speed to the lowest setting to avoid wrinkles and fiber damage.
Part Two: Drying and Ironing
High temperatures and direct sunlight are the biggest enemies of silk.
• Avoid Tumble Drying: Never use a tumble dryer. High temperatures will cause silk fibers to shrink, age, and lose their characteristic luster.
• Air Drying: Gently roll the damp garment in a clean white towel to absorb excess moisture. Then, hang or lay flat to dry in a cool, shaded place.
• Important Note: Avoid direct sunlight on silk, as UV rays can cause fading and yellowing of the fibers. Ironing (if necessary) • Settings: Iron only when the silk is slightly damp. Use the "Silk" or "Low Temperature" setting on your iron.
• Protective Measures: Always iron garments inside out, and ideally place a thin cloth between the iron and the silk.
Part Three: Storage and Lifespan
Our 22 momme silk is durable, but proper storage is crucial.
• Hanging: Use padded hangers to store robes and slips. Avoid using thin metal hangers, as they can stretch or snag the fabric.
• Moth Protection: Before long-term storage, ensure the silk is clean, as moths are attracted to body oils. Store garments in breathable garment bags and keep away from moisture.
